PSA Antwerp Expands with Five New STS Cranes

PSA Antwerp’s modernisation programme takes a major step forward with the arrival of five new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at Europa Terminal.

These cranes are the largest STS cranes ever ordered for the Port of Antwerp and mark a significant milestone in preparing Europa Terminal for the next generation of ultra-large container ships. Each crane stands 52 metres high, with an outreach of 71.8 metres, capable of handling vessels up to 26 containers wide and featuring a dual-hoist lifting capacity of up to 112 tonnes.

Aligned with PSA’s global sustainability agenda, the cranes are equipped with energy-efficient electric drives, regenerative power systems, and smart-grid compatibility, reducing energy consumption and emissions during vessel handling, and supporting more efficient and sustainable port operations. They are expected to become operational in the second half of 2026.

Edward Tah, Managing Director of PSA Belgium, said:
“This milestone reflects our long-term commitment to Antwerp as a strategic gateway and our drive for nodal excellence in strengthening PSA’s global port network. Project Emerald will increase Europa Terminal’s capacity by 800,000 TEU per year, while significantly enhancing efficiency, reliability, and sustainability for our customers.”

Johan Klaps, chairman of Port of Antwerp-Bruges and Antwerp Port Alderman, added:
“The arrival of these cranes is a clear demonstration of how we are preparing Europa Terminal for the future. This is essential to maintain the port’s competitiveness and ensure the smooth and safe handling of the largest container ships. Work on the new quay wall is in full swing as we prepare for operations at the renovated quay section.”
